Wix vs. Webflow

Is Webflow the right platform for your website?

Find out!

Webflow vs. Wix: Both drag-and-drop editors tested

Whether for their first web project or moving their own website: Today, users have more choices than ever. WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, or Webflow — the list of potential builders is long (and getting longer). Now that we've already looked at the pros and cons of Webflow vs. Framer, Webflow vs. WordPress and Webflow vs. Squarespace Today, let's take a look at Webflow and Wix.

In a big comparison between Webflow and Wix, we take a closer look at the features of both tools and find out which platform is the right choice for your project.

What is Webflow?

Webflow is a website builder that has been available to users since 2013. Instead of having to install software on the computer, the entire development takes place online. At the heart of this is the drag-and-drop editor, which should make it possible to compile a page quickly and efficiently. In recent years, Webflow has become more and more popular and is now one of the most popular tools for creating websites.

What is Wix?

Since 2006, Wix has been offering users the ability to create websites without code. This makes the editor one of the industry's pioneers and today serves as the backbone for millions of websites. Under the name Wix Studio, the company now also offers an editor that is aimed more at tech-savvy users. While the “classic” Wix wants to impress with templates and themes, Wix Studio is an attempt to set up a sophisticated, visual editor.

Webflow vs. Wix: Pricing

Of course, when it comes to a website builder, the price is also a factor that can make the right choice for your situation. In terms of price, Wix and Webflow are in the same league. While a basic site on Wix costs 17€ per month, a webflow page costs 18$ per month (if paid annually only 14 $/month). One of the advantages of Webflow is the generous free plan: Here we can build our website at no cost, try out the CMS and find out whether and how our site can be implemented in Webflow. Only when we're really satisfied and ready to launch, do we choose a paid plan and publish our website.

Wix Studio also offers a free plan that allows us to learn more about the platform's features. Similar to other tools, we only pay when we want to put our site online. In direct comparison, however, the price-performance package at Webflow is more attractive, as we not only get a visual editor with a lot of power, but also a handful of useful tools for SEO and other aspects that make our website even better.

Wix or Webflow? Comparing the features of both platforms

But what exactly are the advantages of both platforms, and how does Wix Studio vs. Webflow compare? Let's make the comparison and look at both builders in terms of design, SEO, e-commerce, and a number of other aspects so you can make the best choice for your next project.

usability

Before we take a closer look at all the features of both platforms, it's worth looking at one point in advance: the user experience. In fact, it is often the operator who decides whether a tool can meet our requirements. Nested menus, an old-fashioned interface design or long loading times are all exclusion criteria that can quickly navigate a website builder offside.

Wix in particular prides itself on being a particularly intuitive platform for creating websites. Onboarding is extremely simple: after answering a few questions about our website, we make the choice between different templates. Alternatively, we can start with a blank page. We then end up directly in the visual editor, where we can drag and drop elements on the page. At first glance, the Wix Editor appears tidy and user-friendly, but upon closer inspection of the editor, we quickly realize that many important settings are difficult to find.

Webflow is completely different: Here we have access to an interface that presents all important parameters in a clear and logical order. From the layout of our elements to the appearance and the more detailed settings options, we have a direct overview of everything. In doing so, we can open and close various tabs to bring order to our workspace at any time. With just a few clicks, we add new elements to our site or switch to the CMS to manage the content of our website. It is not without reason that Webflow is one of the most popular tools in the world of website builders; in addition to a fast and responsive editor, the work interface is also absolutely top-class.

design

Especially in recent years, web design has steadily gained in importance. Because pages today not only have to work properly, they also have to look good! It is therefore all the more important that the builder of our choice offers sufficient flexibility in terms of design.

Webflow offers full control over every pixel of our website: In addition to the intuitive drag-and-drop editor, we can adjust the properties of our elements down to the finest detail. Anyone who is familiar with CSS can basically create anything imaginable with the Webflow editor — and thanks to the custom elements, we can also use HTML and JavaScript to add completely customized elements to our site. This makes Webflow the undisputed market leader when it comes to design flexibility — because anyone looking for more freedom to design their own website almost has to fall back on classic code.

It is true that Wix also has the option to customize elements with CSS and other adjustments. However, the editor doesn't go into as much detail as with Webflow; in addition, the interface in Wix doesn't look as intuitive and we sometimes have to search to find the appropriate customization options. This is where Webflow scores points with clarity and more control over the individual aspects of our elements.

content management

Content is king — this sentence covers today's landscape of the World Wide Web fairly precisely. Because organic marketing is often only possible through blogs and other content. The cornerstone of good content marketing (in addition to good content) is a good content management system (CMS). Both Webflow and Wix had an integrated CMS that allowed us to create and manage content.

In both editors, we create blog posts and other types of content that bring our site to life without any code. Webflow's advanced features include the ability to link content types together. Thanks to this mechanic, we can create relationships between different types of content (such as blog posts and categories) and use these connections to tailor our front-end exactly to our needs.

Wix Studio also allows you to categorize contributions, but is more likely to scratch the surface. Granular customization options, such as those offered by Webflow, are in vain here. Still, there's no question that Wix Studio is an excellent choice for small businesses or simple blogs.

extensions

For static websites that are simply intended to provide information, most website builders are more than enough. But what if we need more functionality, for example to accept bookings from our customers or want to turn our website into a marketplace? In these and other cases, extensions, so-called extensions or plug-ins, are often the solution without having to laboriously code everything yourself.

Both Wix and Webflow have tools to add additional features to our site. These are usually solutions created directly by the respective provider or by third parties (such as the community). With the help of these extensions, we can tailor our online presence exactly to our specific needs.

At Webflow, we expand our site using so-called apps. Using the internal App Marketplace, we can add the apps to our site in just a few clicks. We have a variety of solutions at our disposal: from payment processing tools to chatbots to complete systems for memberships, the range of useful extensions is long (and is getting longer every day thanks to an active community). Many of the apps are chargeable, but there are also a large number of free tools.

Wix also has a marketplace, the Wix App Market, which we can use to make our site even better. Some features also come directly from the provider: Wix Bookings, for example, is an integrated solution that should make bookings for hair salons, tradesmen and other service providers easier than ever. While many other builders only offer integration via third-party providers à la Calendly, Wix clearly stands out from the crowd here. In addition to the booking tool, Wix also offers a range of other apps that make our business life easier. However, it quickly becomes clear here too: The limitations of Wix can only be slightly shifted through expansions.

SEO

What would a nice-looking and functional site be without SEO? After all, we also want to welcome users to our website — and without well-founded search engine optimization, paid marketing is often all that remains. Therefore, when comparing Wix Studio vs. Webflow, we also need to take a look at how well both solutions drive optimization for search engines.

Whether Webflow or Wix: both platforms provide us with tools with which we can manage the SEO settings for our site. In just a few clicks, we set up meta tags and other important features for well-founded SEO. If you want more control over search engine optimization, Webflow will be happy: The Webflow SEO tools allow us to make Robots.txt, sitemaps and other important SEO settings directly on our site's dashboard. Here, too, Webflow shows a great deal of flexibility and gives us the opportunity to set up our online presence optimally for search engines — without stressful coding.

If, on the other hand, you use Wix Studio, you will be greeted by a particularly practical feature when you look at the SEO dashboard: the SEO Assistant. This gives us direct feedback on our SEO score, gives us a practical SEO checklist and points out when we've missed an important point. Especially for beginners, these tips can be valuable to quickly get your own site ready for SEO. On the other hand, Webflow also provides important feedback on the state of our site: Did we omit a headline (H2, H3...) or forget the alt description in an image? The editor tells us right away — and lets us fix the error with just a few clicks.

animations

In addition to an appealing design, websites can now also score points with animations that increase the interactivity of our site and captivate users. But creating these animations often requires a great deal of effort: Visually sophisticated animations often require hundreds of lines of code to achieve an appealing result.

Not so with Webflow and Wix! Both editors offer the option of animating elements with just a few clicks. We can choose from a range of ready-made animations to bring our site to life quickly and significantly improve the user experience. However, the full potential lies in the animation editors that both Webflow and Wix Studio provide us with. Here we can create our own animations, which we can adapt exactly to our wishes.

Although this also requires a certain amount of technical know-how, the results speak for themselves. From impressive parallax animations that give our site a sense of depth and three-dimensionality, to scrolling animations that take the user on a virtual journey, anything is possible. We create these animations purely through the visual editor, which gives us free rein in the creative process. And in fact, both platforms know how to impress when it comes to animations. One argument in favor of Webflow in this case is the intuitive interface, which is a bit more pleasant to use than its counterpart in Wix.

ecommerce

Although neither Webflow nor Wix were designed with a focus on e-commerce, due to growing demand, it makes sense that both platforms now have e-commerce functionalities. And one thing can be said for sure: Both make opening and running an online shop extremely easy!

Wix offers e-commerce as a free add-on to our website; with Webflow, on the other hand, we can turn our site into an e-commerce website. In the case of Webflow, the prices are 42$ per month if paid monthly or 29 $/month if paid annually (a total of 348$ for a year). In addition to e-commerce features, we will also receive a CMS, so the package can be particularly worthwhile for online shops with a focus on content marketing.

In principle, both e-commerce solutions are very similar in structure. Using the intuitive backend, we create products, organize them into categories and determine which payment methods we accept. What sets Webflow apart from Wix here is the already well-known flexibility in the design and feel of our website: Instead of relying on ready-made blocks and sections, we have full control over the look of our shop and the arrangement of our products. Coupled with the unique animations that we can create with Webflow, we create an online shop that values user experience.

👉 Why Webflow is often not enough for e-commerce — and what we do instead

Webflow or Wix? This is how you make the right choice!

For small businesses, hobbyists, or blogs with relatively manageable content, Wix is undoubtedly an excellent choice. The ready-made templates and easy-to-use website tools are more than suitable, especially for beginners. In this case, however, you have to forego deeper customization options and are quickly tied to designs that are also used in this form by numerous other websites.

If you value a design that really fits your brand and reflects your unique values, Webflow is much better for you. Because here you not only have full control over every pixel of your website; thanks to the editor, you can also create highly complex animations that will inspire your users. In the hands of professionals, Webflow is a tool that, in a sense, has no limits.
